Artist. Creator. Life Explorer.

CHRISTA

Welcome to the portfolio site of Christa's legacy, pages where you can discover her work, life, and thoughts. One of the defining principles that drove this talented artist was a deep love for life, an interest in and fascination with people, and a lifelong commitment to creating art.

Christa's painting career spanned over 50 years and generated over a thousand pieces of art - primarily portraits, but also including still lifes, landscapes, abstracts and more.  Her use of mediums included oil, acrylic, silkscreen, enamel, pencil, charcoal, pastels, tempera, and more.  As a woman artist, her signature varied throughout the decades and her two marriages.  To date, there are 15 documented variations of her signature in combinations of her first name, maiden name, two husbands' names and initials.

This site was created to share Christa's story, life and art.  If you believe you are in possession of one of her pieces, we would appreciate hearing from you to further document the whereabouts of her works.  A detailed inventory, of known works and their last known location, compiled in 2017, is in the Christa Sommer file at the Smithsonian Portrait Gallery Library in Washington, DC.  In the 1970s, Christa documented that her works are in private collections in: Frankfurt, Hamburg, Berlin and other places throughout Germany as well as in Paris, London, Sweden, Holland, India, Canada, South and North America.

"The portrait was my fascination from the beginning.
People, I was very fascinated by people."
